According to the Home Innovation Research Labs , asphalt roofing shingles are extremely popular among homeowners and almost 70% of American people opt for asphalt shingles while replacing their roofs. Shingles come in great variety and provide an asymmetrical look to the roof. Their installation process is quite time-consuming and expensive.

Tile shingles

Tile shingles are made up of concrete and can withstand very harsh and extreme weather conditions they also can hold up the extra weight. Although some specific coloring on asphalt shingles can also look like tiles, Still, tile roofing is typically much stronger and suitable for areas with extreme weather conditions and harsh climates.

Wood Shingles

This is the most traditional roofing option that mainly involves the formation of a roof using cedar or redwood. To make wood shingles, wood is cut and crafted into precise shapes. Wood shingles have a beautiful look the downside of installing wood shingles is that they are prone to fire damage.

Wood Shake Shingles

Although these are also made up of wood, they do not involve the very precise cutting of the wood and just mimic the natural look.

Metal Shingles

Metal roofing is another unique option that is quite strong but requires a great deal of money and labor.

There are two major types of metal roofing shingles depending upon the type of materials and the system requirements.

  • Standing seam metal roofs
  • Stone-coated metal roofing shingles.

Standing seam metal roofs involve the use of materials like galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper, and aluminum.

Stone-coated metal roofing shingles are quite different in shape and structure and look more similar to clay tile roofing or concrete tile roofing.

What to consider while choosing roofing shingles?

The personal preferences of homeowners play a vital role in choosing the type of roofing shingles. It also depends on the location and the weather conditions of the particular area.

Some shingles are more suitable for the installation of solar panels and offer a double layer of protection while others may require the preparation of structural elements. So be sure to ask your roofing contractor about the roofing system if youb plan on installing solar panels.
